Return Crew Day 16 – 23 February 2020

Oliver Menhinick

So as I sit here writing the day 16 blog, Francois preps the second bunch of fish from yesterday’s catch in a similar way to the he prepped it for last night’s braai that we had. While braaing the fish, Kristy made delicious coconut rice with honey drizzled sweet potatoes. I was helming the boat and out the corner of my eye, I saw a silver flash in the water. I looked over to see if I could see it again and then I saw a dolphin! Then I saw another and another. I pointed it out to my watch partner; Tony and we noticed there was a whole pod of them following us. The other crew members came out to join us on a moment like no other. The dolphins followed us for about 30 minutes.

About 5 minutes went passed where we no longer saw the dolphins when suddenly we saw at least 40 to 50 of them popping out of the water, spinning into the waves and playing. It was truly a unique and breath taking experience!

The excitement is building for us to get to go ashore on Tristan Da Cunha. We are all extremely keen for a potential shower, AND (All fingers and toes crossed) for a good old burger! The winds have been good to us over the past few days, where we are averaging between 7 and 8 knots.
Exciting times lie ahead!
