Return Crew Day 1 – 08 February 2020

A log by Cam

We picked up an extra crew member!!! Can you believe it, out of the blue! He came at a perfect time as sadly Jake was unable to join us on this voyage home. Francois is a super cool laid back chap who recently (last year) completed his Yacht Masters! He has fitted in well with the crew, with only one complaint being he got a short bunk. I find this very funny though as when you on watch if you look through the tiny window you can see dangling feet hanging into the galley!! It’s a real good chuckle!

If you go check the pic of the crew before we left you’ll be able to spot him!

As we started to approach noon we began to wait for Francois’s passport to come back from customs. In the meantime we packed the last of the things away, took down the Bimini and filled up on diesel. Funnily enough while we were waiting and filling up for sometime Rory realised that there was no diesel actually coming! We got that sorted very quickly as we all sitting on the edges of the lazarretts (aka benches for some of us normies) in the cockpit just waiting to go!!We said our last goodbyes and touched land for the last time for some time to come.

Due to the weather patterns and wind direction we had to go South before heading East with hope that on Sunday the wind direction would change as indicated on the Windy app. We are all in good health and are keeping a good speed! Due to us heading South we have to sail close hauled, this meaning very close to direction which the wind is coming from. Sadly this means the boat is very rocky!! Some of us have started feeding the fish aka an acute dose of chunderitist but the worst is behind us. We are recovering well and have had a nice cheese sandwich followed by our skipper treating us to some Game mix with apples!!

At about 8 am this morning the 2020/02/08 Cameron and Clare saw a boat. Later to find out it was an oil rig. As we approached the oil rig Rory mentioned that in 2014 on his trip to Rio sailing the cape to Rio race that their crew had gone through an oil field. As we approached the oil rigs we decide to overtake on the left and put the engine on and motor sail! Passing the Rigs we were in total awe as we scanned the oil rig in search of humans! Sadly they were all on lunch!

We are happily on our way and are beginning to ask when we are going to swim, well I am (Cameron). The crew is sleeping a lot and are adjusting to the motion of the ocean. We have travelled 125 nm so far and are constantly learning new things! We are not at that stage where we can sit inside and play cards but, when we are I shall let ya’ll know.
